Void

Guglielmo Poletti, 2019

The Void collection was conceived as an exploration of form in relation to the architectural concepts of mass and void. Pure volumes and linear profiles define solids that are partially deconstructed and hollowed out, creating a design language that is at once unique, rigorous, and light. Each element of the collection is designed to offer a harmonious balance between material presence and visual perception, transforming metal into a tool of expression and lightness.

In Void, the act of subtraction becomes visual poetry: the curvature of the base, along with the carefully balanced solids and voids, creates volumes that appear to float in space. All elements of the collection interpret metal as a dynamic material, capable of modulating light and shadow and generating a subtle yet powerful visual rhythm.

All elements of the collection interpret metal as a dynamic material, capable of modulating light and shadow and generating a subtle yet powerful visual rhythm.

The entire Void collection is available in the A74 Natural Iron finish, achieved through a treatment that enhances the metal’s natural tones and flame patterns. This finish gives each piece a unique texture, highlighting the materiality and craftsmanship of the product. The curvature of the bases and the precision of the connections ensure stability and strength, while the continuous surfaces and linear profiles maintain a strict aesthetic coherence. Combined with the carefully studied geometry of the volumes, the Natural Iron finish transforms each element of the Void collection into a piece with strong character—versatile and always capable of integrating seamlessly into different settings.

The Void family includes stools, tables, benches, and consoles, each conceived as a variation on the theme of pure volumes and the interplay of solids and voids. The Void stools are characterized by visual lightness and balanced proportions, while the tables interpret metal in a fluid way, offering continuous surfaces that appear to float in space. The benches expand the concept of deconstructed volume into larger elements, capable of defining a space without weighing it down, whereas the consoles combine elegance and geometric rigor, serving as functional and refined linking points between environments. Across all variations, the collection stands out for its versatility and ability to harmonize with different styles, offering objects that are discreet yet full of character.

Guglielmo Poletti (b. 1987) is an Italian designer. He founded his practice in 2016 after graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven, where he earned an MA in Contextual Design. Currently based in Milan, his studio covers a variety of projects that range from custom pieces and limited edition series, to collaborations with the industry.

From the very beginning Poletti has developed a truly consistent language, built around solid criteria. Deeply rooted in a hands-on investigation, his research explores the limits of materials in relation to their use, challenging our perception by questioning the notions of balance, precariousness and structural strength. Characterised by the extreme purity and apparent simplicity, his elementary constructions stand as metaphors of solved complexity, referencing minimalist sensibilities through their architectural qualities. In his works, the manipulation of subtle details can lead to unexpectedly powerful outcomes, allowing him to achieve a significant impact through minimum interventions. Grounded on a ‘thinking by doing’ philosophy, his approach entails an experimental attitude, where intuition plays a central role in order to ensure strong coherence within the process.

Poletti’s works have been published and presented internationally, and over the last few years his studio received commissions by several clients including Galleria Rossana Orlandi, SEEDS London Gallery, Desalto, Decoratori Bassanesi, Arven AS, Wallpaper* Magazine. The prototype of his ‘Equilibrium Stool’ has been acquired by the Design museum Gent for their permanent collection, while his first industrially produced work – the tile collection ‘Segments’ – has been awarded with the ‘ADI Ceramics & Bathroom Design Award’ as the most innovative product presented at Cersaie 2018.

In 2018 Poletti was selected among the six young designers winners of the Italian ‘Rising Talent Awards’ at MAISON&OBJET in Paris. At the same time he was shortlisted for the ‘Officine Panerai Next Generation Designer of the Year’, part of the 2018 edition of the ‘Wallpaper* Design Awards’. In 2019 he has been nominated ‘Young Talent of the Year’ by Elle Decor Italia, which shortlisted him for the ‘EDIDA – Elle Deco International Design Awards’.
